MCIKEY McCann asked his Donegal hurlers for a response – and got it in style.
Donegal bounced back from a heavy reversal at Kildare by scoring a 17-point win over Mayo in Letterkenny.
Donegal won 4-18 to 0-13 with Declan Coulter’s first-half double firing Donegal on their way to a win that preserves their Division 2B status.
“We were looking for a response,” McCann told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.
“It would have been easy for the head to drop. Kildare are a level above us. We played very poorly and we didn’t ask any questions.
“At training all week, we talked about a response. Mayo are no bad team.”
Richie Ryan netted a goal on 22 minutes with Coulter’s brace taking Donegal clear before Ronan McDermott bagged a fourth major.
McCann said: “The intensity we brought in defence, from the full-back line out, we didn’t give them an inch.
“We had the match-ups right. The forwards really worked hard. We stopped their supply of ball going in.
“We were patient and we knew the chances would come. It was a very satisfying day for us. Last week we didn’t have the hunger.”
