WITH THE COUNTDOWN to the Rio Olympics down to days now, Mark English put in his best time of the season last night.
The Letterkenny native finished eighth in the 800m at the Diamond League as part of the Anniversary Games in London in a time of 1:45.36 in a top class field.

The race at the 2012 Olympic Stadium in Stratford was won by France’s Pierre-Ambroise Bosse in 1:43.88. Brandon McBride from Canada came second in a time of 1:43:95. Ferguson Rotich, the Kenyan trials winner, got third place in 1:44.38 ahead of Botswana’s London 2012 silver medallist Nijel Amos on 1:44.66.
English’s personal best over the distance remains the 1:44.84 he clocked in 2013 but last night’s run shaved almost two seconds off his best in 2016.
The 2016 Olympic Games get underway with the opening ceremony on Friday, August 5.
