Jim McGuinness’s career as a soccer coach in China got off to the best possible start on Saturday when Beijing Sinobo Guoan defeated Chinese Super League leaders Guangzhou Evergrande 2-0.
McGuinness was recruited by former Bayer Leverkusen manager Roger Schmidt, who was recently appointed as Beijing’s new manager. McGuinness is the assistant manager.
Their first game on Saturday saw Jonathan Soriano’s double see leaders Guangzhou Evergrande – who have won the CSL in each of the last six seasons – fall to defeat.
Soriano netted in the opening minute and added the crucial second six minutes into the second half.
It was the first time since 2009 that Guangzhou Evergrande have lost two games in a row.
Former Brazil, Portugal and Chelsea boss Luis Felipe Scolari is the manager of Guangzhou Evergrande, but Big Jim had the edge on Big Phil on Saturday.
This weekend Beijing, who are seventh, host 11th-placed Guizhou Zhicheng at the Workers Stadium.
Highlights of the game can be seen here – and McGuinness pops up after the first goal, celebrating with his new colleagues
