Jack Keaney netted a stunning goal as Sligo Rovers earned an opening night draw at League of Ireland champions Dundalk tonight.
Keaney drilled in to give Sligo the lead at Oriel Park on a night when he and 19-year-old goalkeeper Ed McGinty provided the magic moments.
Keaney was shaping to shoot from the moment Liam Kerrigan was fouled by Chris Shields in the 43rd minute.
Keaney’s low drive flew past Gary Rogers, the Dundalk ‘keeper, to give Sligo the lead at the break.
Keaney hit three goals for the Bit O’Red last season and laid down an early marker for new manager Liam Buckley.
Teenage stopped McGinty didn’t do his chances any harm – as he turned in a Man of the Match display.
Scottish-born Ballyshannon-based McGinty, who previously spent time at Celtic and Hibs, saved an 11th minute penalty from Pat Hoban. Later in the first half, McGinty denied Hoban’s header with a stunning stop.
Dundalk drew level via Sean Murray 12 minutes into the second half.
