MONA McSharry has spoke of Olympic qualification as a ‘dream come true’.
The Marlin’s Swimming Club ace booked her spot in Tokyo this week in the 100m breaststroke.
McSharry twice beat the Olympic qualifying time and lowered the Irish record each time. In her heat at the Irish Olympic Trials, McSharry went 1:06.97, besting that again with a 1:06.29 semi-final.
“It’s still sinking in – slowly,” McSharry told Off The Ball.
“It’s a dream come true.
“It’s definitely a relief. This has weighed on my mind since 2016. I knew that I was close enough in 2016 to know that I would be able to make it. It’s great to have it done and enjoy racing again.”
The Grange native, a student at University of Tennessee, will go in the 200m breaststroke later this week.
McSharry won the 100m breaststroke final last night, a race she used as preparation for her 200m attempt.
