DONEGAL footballer Emer Gallagher has spoke of her belief that sport has a positive role to play in the minds of young girls.
A teacher at Loreto Secondary School in Letterkenny, the Termon and Donegal star was speaking about the Lidl ‘One Good Club’ initiative.
The top is one that is close to Gallagher’s heart.
“I’m working with girls aged 13 to 18 day-in and day-out and I see a lot of them fall away from sport, especially at the 16 or 16 age group,” Gallagher said.
“There is a huge thing of emotional well-being in the country. A kid could go out after school, relax, have an hour to play football, be with friends, escape from school and the stress of it. It’s a very positive thing.
“Every girl or boy needs to have that outlet and forget what’s going on in their heads.
“It’s about time we looked at how young girls are dealing with stress and with education. It’s something that has been swept under the carpet in previous times, so the fact that Lidl and Ladies Football are bringing it to the fore this year is fantastic.”
