Earlier this week, Amber Barrett recalled watching Robbie Keane’s cartwheels at the 2002 World Cup – and tonight she replicated the famous celebration in Keane’s neighbourhood!
Tallaght man Keane made the celebration something of an icon in Irish football.
The young Barrett watched on in awe in those days and tonight it was Barrett’s turn to perform the celebration as she scored the match winner for Ireland agains Slovakia in a 2019 World Cup qualifier.
Leanne Kiernan’s opener for Ireland was cancelled out by any own goal from goalkeeper Marie Hourihan.
But, just four minutes from the end, Barrett latched onto a ball over the top and riffled home. Soon, the Milford woman was cartwheeling into the corner – just in front of the large crowd from Donegal who had traveled down.
