GLENFIN reached the quarter-finals of the Donegal SFC last year and a fine win in Killybegs tonight has set them off on the right path in 2020 with Gerard Ward’s kicking to the fore, writes Charlie Collins.
Killybegs 1-6 Glenfin 1-12
Although they trailed at Fintra by the opening two scores, put over by the hosts’ two county players Eoghan Ban Gallagher, Ward posted the first three of a total that would amount to eight in the end to put the away team in front. However, McFadden’s forced withdrawal with a possible hamstring injury on 15 minutes certainly hurt Killybegs.
Glenfin would build on that with Ward scoring five first half frees to go in with a healthy advantage, 1-6 to 0-5 in front. The goal came on 24 minutes from a run and finish from Ross Marley.
Between the third and 28th minute, John Cunningham’s Killybegs scored only once, through James McSharry and the same player would do so again late in the first period, and Shaun Gorrell would add a 45.
Points at the start of the second half from Conor Ward and Ross Marley pushed Glenfin’s lead out to six. Killbegs needed something and they got it on 41 minutes through Paul Cunningham’s fisted effort into the net. When Gorrell followed this up with a point they were just two behind, 1-6 to 1-8.
However, Glenfin weathered the storm and scored the last four points of the evening, with Jason Morrow’s preceding three more Ward frees.
