MARK ENGLISH has progressed to the semi-finals of the 800m at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Beijing.
The Letterkenny native (pictured above) finished his heat in fifth place in a time of 1:46.69 to ensure progression as fourth fastest loser.
The 22-year-old, whose season’s best was 1:44.84 at the Diamond League at the Anniversary Games in London last month, saw Amel Tuke from Botswana win their heat in 1:46.12, with Nadar Belhanbel is Morocco second in 1:46.23 and Colombia’s Rafith Rodriguez third in 1:46.39. Fourth place went to Erik Sowinski from the United States, who finished in 1:46.63.
Overall, from the competitors in the first round heats, English’s time was 12th best and he will be back in action on Sunday at 1:31pm Irish time in the semi-finals.
