LETTERKENNY ROVERS ENJOYED a comfortable 4-0 home win over Swilly Rovers at the Aura Centre on Sunday.
Before they made the breakthrough though, Eamon McConigley’s side spurned a glorious opportunity.
On 22 minutes, Swilly Rovers’ Dylan Hegarty upended Jonny Bonner and referee Marty McGarrigle had no option but to send the defender off.
Bonner stepped up to take the penalty, only to see his effort clip the base of the post. In such instances, the rules of the game state the player that hits the spot kick is not allowed to touch the ball next.
As it was, it rebounded to Darren McElwaine (pictured above by Stephen Doherty), the Letterkenny Rovers frontman, who was probably unaware and thus failed to get enough purchase on the ball – and that allowed Swilly goalkeeper Gareth Wade to hack the bobbling effort clear.
In the end though, it all worked out for the home team with McElwaine scoring twice and Bonner also on target in the victory that sent them to the top of the Ulster Senior League table.
Father and son, Anthony and Zach Gorman, also lined out alongside one another for Letterkenny.
All’s well that ends well!
Stephen Doherty was there, as he so frequently is, to record the action …
