DONEGAL TOWN BASKETBALL CLUB’S Senior ladies hit top form as they defeated Sligo All Stars to stay top of the North West League at home on Friday night.
Donegal Town BC 78-40 Sligo All-Stars
Missing the injured Charlene McHugh and the unavailable Eva Diver and Emma McKinley our girls still had a full 12 players on the bench for this crucial home game.
Here’s some of the action, courtesy of Donegal town BC …
A strong start from Ruta Balezentyte and Julianne Murphy – who scored four points apiece – while Kelly Harron added another when sprung from the bench to great effect.
Dolan scored all of all stars points to leave it 10-6 to the home side after the first. Our Girls really took the game to All Stars in the second with Tara Khan opening the quarter with a fine score followed by a nice Murphy outside shot.
Brid Murphy, with four points, showed her baseline shot is as good as ever while the young Holly Marie Carty nailed two nice outside shots as well.
Kelly Harron 4pts also took the game to the All stars zone but the introduction of Claudia Coughlin who would go on to score 21pts was the difference in the sides.
She added a real edge to our game as she was terrific around the basket and added real energy in Defense. Half time a 32-16 lead to Donegal Town BC and they would show no let up.
Into the third and a score from Julianne got us going as Coughlin would score three in a row along with a strong Ruta Balezentyte quarter who hit seven points.
Ciara Mooneys positive influence on the side was rewarded with 4pts for a 55-31 lead going into the last. This was to prove our best quarter as our girls made full use of the game.
Eight points from Tara Khan who really led the attack well along with the impressive Coughlin scoring 10, while veteran Brid Murphy, who scored four, showed her importance to the team with a couple of well taken baskets.
Caroline Breslin again provided the base for this win along with Ciara Mooney, Kelly Harron and Brid Murphy who do all the hard work under the boards and provide most of our go forward ball of which the talented Khan, Coughlin, Murphy and Breslin really make use of.
The younger and talented Holly Marie Carty, Louise Carr and Kara Meehan are also showing themselves to be very useful members of the squad and will hope to get more minutes to keep improving.
Donegal Town had 10 different scorers which bodes well. Claudia Coughlin was fantastic and MVP for this game with all the girls playing really well. Next up for the girls is an away match to LYIT on Thursday and Cup Semi Finals on Sunday at home.
Big week for a couple of our players as Julianne Murphy leads her Colaiste Cholmcille side tomorrow in the All Ireland League Final hopping to secure a double All Ireland. Best of luck to Julianne and to all her team.
MVP Claudia Coughlin has a big game too as she plays for her college Maynooth against Tralee IT in the All Ireland Colleges semi final. Best of luck to both players from all the ladies team and all at the club.
