DARYL MURPHY SCORED his first international goal to give the Republic of Ireland a 2-2 draw in their first World Cup 2018 qualifier against Serbia in Belgrade tonight.
The Newcastle United striker was only on the field five minutes when he headed home an 81st minute leveller for Martin O’Neill’s side, who looked to be losing their way in the soggy conditions.
[adrotate group=”38″]Jeff Hendrick’s third minute shot deflected off Branislav Ivanović to give Ireland the lead but from then on, the Boys in Green played a dangerous game of containment.
Filip Kostić grabbed a goal in the 61st minute following some uncertain Irish defending to deservedly level for the home side. Six minutes later, Dušan Tadić of Southampton put Serbia in front from the penalty spot after Jonathan Walters was somewhat harshly penalised for a foul on Kostić.

However, the West Ham United goalkeeper, who was named man of the match, was thanking his lucky stars after spilling a routine  shot and seeing Andrija Pavlović hit the underside of the crossbar from point blank range.
Murphy made it 2-2 from a free header from Robbie Brady’s corner before Seamus Coleman, who was named captain, cleared off the line when Ivanovic’s shot deflected off Walters when the Killybegs native had initially played the Serbs onside.
