RORY GALLAGHER, the Donegal manager, wants his side to get out of their group and into the semi-finals of the Bank of Ireland Dr McKenna Cup.
A 1-11 to 0-11 win over Down in Ballybofey was certainly a sound way to begin the new year.
With games against St Mary’s College and Fermanagh to come, Donegal will be confident of making it to the knockout phase as Gallagher looks to build competition in his ranks ahead of the Allianz League campaign at the end of the month.
“We’d like to get out of the group,” the Donegal manager told Donegal Sport Hub.
“The whole thing is different from other years when we were late back in training.
“We have such an abundance of young quality players and for them there would be nothing better than playing in a McKenna Cup semi-final.”
The big score yesterday came from Frank McGlynn, Donegal’s captain for the day, who scored a goal after only 68 seconds.

The Glenfin man admitted that he was attempting a point with his shot, but smiled: “If you put the ball in that general direction there’s always a chance it’ll drop in.
“It was a fantastic start for us, especially with so many new faces, and we maintained the lead throughout.”
