WE ALL KNOW about the dangers rally drivers are in – but this video from yesterday’s Midlands Stages Rally shows just how close the shaves can be.
The onboard camera in the Vauxhall Chevette HSR of Ballindrait driver Andrew McLoone, with Conal Doherty from Manorcunningham on the notes, outlines the scenarios crews can find themselves in.
McLoone is flat out in fourth gear when he comes across a blockage on the ninth and final stage of the event, with the Escort of John Reddington and Johnny Rooney having crashed.
After narrowly avoiding a collision with the Escort, McLoone can’t get gear in the Chevette again and Doherty has to exit to warn the oncoming crews.
McLoone and Doherty finished 12th overall and were third in class 13 in the Longford-based event.
Scottish duo David Bogie and Kevin Rae in the Skoda Fabia won the Midlands Stages Rally after some late drama. Donegal town’s Gary McElhinney was calling the notes for runner-up Paddy McVeigh.
Dungannon’s McVeigh led going into that final stage, but Bogie produced a magnificent time to take the win.
