USL – Cockhill within a point of eighth successive title

COCKHILL Celtic moved to within a point of an eighth successive Ulster Senior League title last night.

The Inishowen side will clinch the crown again on Sunday with a point at fellow title-chasers Bonagee United.

The Gavin Cullen-managed Cockhill have been the standard-bearers in the USL in recent seasons, having swept the boards with successive doubles until that march was ended by Letterkenny Rovers in last season’s Donegal News USL League Cup final.

The Covid-19 shutdown did not adversely affect Cockhill Celtic’s form as they came back to action with a 2-1 win over Letterkenny Rovers on Sunday.

Last night, Cockhill overcame Derry City Reserves 4-0 at the Charlie O’Donnell Sports Grounds. Adam Duffy netted twice with Laurence Toland and Lee McColgan also on the mark.

At Dry Arch Park, goals from Garbhan Grant, Ryan Rainey and Jamie Lynagh sent Bonagee United on their way to a 3-2 derby win over Letterkenny Rovers.

Grant’s first-half goal was the only separator at the break. Rainey and Lynagh had Bonagee three-up with Rovers having had Rhys McDermott sent off.

Late goals by Kevin McGrath and Lee Toland, from a penalty, narrowed the margin, but it was Bonagee’s night.

In the other game, Finn Harps Reserves overcame Fanad United 3-0.
