BARRY MCNAMEE OF Derry City and former Finn Harps striker Con McLaughlin were respective winners of the soccer award in 2013 and 1978 at the Donegal Sports Star Awards.
They spoke to Charlie Collins on what it meant to win those awards and how they see the 2016 season developing for Derry and Harps. McLaughlin is the uncle of McNamee, whose younger brother Tony is on the books of Finn Harps.
The north-western rivals will meet on the first night of the season, March 4, at Finn Park in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division.

“We’re playing Harps first game of the season,” McNamee said. “Both clubs are probably delighted to help push one another on. For me, all the family will be shouting for my brother Tony so I’ll just have to get on with it.”

McLaughlin added: “It’s great for the two clubs and it’s great for them to be meeting so early. I wish Harps consolidate for the season and I’d like to wish Barry and Tony all the best of the season. Derry have to get down to the nitty-gritty as well.”
