TWIN TOWNS boxer Ciara Anderson is aiming to win her third Irish title this weekend – and the Twin Towns woman will create a little slice of history in Dublin.
Ballybofey woman Anderson (pictured with Twin Towns ABC colleague Donna Barr) comes from a famous boxing family and the LyIT student will go into the history books on Friday night at the National Stadium.
When she faces Shannon Sweeney (St Anne’s) in the light flyweight semi-final of the National Under-22 Championships, Anderson will be taking part in the first women’s bout at the Stadium to be fought over three, three-minute rounds.
Following a change to the rules late in 2016, women’s bouts have moved from four, two-minute rounds to three-threes.
The 18-year-old Anderson is a grand-daughter of former Irish Olympian Brian Anderson senior from Ballybofey, who punched for Ireland at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Ciara is a chip off the old block. Already a two-time Irish champion, she faces Sweeney from St Anne’s in the Irish Under-22 semi-final on Friday with Canal’s Chloe Fleck awaiting the winner in Saturday’s final.
In 2014, Ciara won the Youth 1 46kgs final when she defeated Lauren Stewart from Togher and in 2015 she won the Youth 2 title at 46kgs by way of a walkover win.
