A ST Johnston woman has been awarded a BEM Honorary Medal for her services to hockey.
Linda Black’s work for the sport in Cookstown, where she now lives, has been recognised with the awarding of a British Empire Medal (BEM). Linda’s award is included on the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for 2021.
The award cites that Linda is being honoured ‘for services to the community in Cookstown’.
A volunteer coach, Linda – nee Lapsley and originally from Hillhead in St Johnston – is the heartbeat of the Cookstown Hockey Club, where he endeavours all the way up the levels from mini hockey have born real rewards in the area.
The Cookstown Hockey Club called Linda ‘a true inspiration’ while her family in St Johnston are immensely proud of her achievements.
Linda played for Raphoe Hockey Club and is a former student of the Royal and Prior in Raphoe.
Her passion for hockey continued after she married and moved to Cookstown.
