TOP RALLY driver Garry Jennings is considering his future in the sport as he struggles to continue to come to terms with the death of Manus Kelly last year.
Following the death of Kelly, while competing in the 2019 Donegal International Rally, Jennings did not compete for the remainder of the year.
Indeed, Jennings contemplated the future as the new rallying season came into focus.
The Kesh man was due to compete at last weekend’s Galway International Rally and was to be the top seed in a WRC Impreza.
However, on the even of the event, Jennings withdrew.
“Returning to rallying was not an easy decision for me as many of you know, after the tragic events of last year,” Jennings, who is a two-time Donegal International Rally winner, said.
“I returned home to speak with Kerry and our young girls last night and together we decided for our peace of mind at this time to withdraw from the rally.”
Jennings, whose regular co-driver is Letterkenny’s Rory Kennedy, is a former Irish Tarmac champion, is unsure as to his future in the sport.
He said: “I have not yet decided if this is permanent and we hope after time that I may return to the stages.”
The rallying community was rocked to its core last June following the tragic death of Kelly, the event winner in the previous three years.
The 41-year-old father of five died when his Hyundai i20 R5 left the road during the Fanad Head stage.
