Tom Mullen of Lifford AC had a winning conclusion to a most successful season when claiming in the Ulster u15 Combined Events Championships at the Mary Peters Track in Belfast last weekend.
Mullen (pictured above) dominated the six-event competition from beginning to end with a number of top class performances.
A very fast 12.49 seconds in the 80m Hurdles was followed up by an equally impressive 5.44m in the Long Jump.
While a little below his best in the High Jump, a 1.54m leap was still sufficient to keep Mullen at the top of the leaderboard.
Mullen bounced right back in the Shot Putt with a fine throw of 12.72m and concluded the day’s busy schedule with a throw of 35.38m in the Javelin and a 2 mins 16.00 seconds in the final event of the day, the 800m. An overall total of 3079 points was more than sufficient to give the talented, young Lifford AC athlete a most deserving victory.
Lifford AC’s Mark Doherty, meanwhile concluded his season with some fine performances in the Open throws events at the Mary Peters Track.
A throw of 36.80m gave the dedicated St. Johnston athlete a fine victory in the Javelin while a throw of 9.56m in the Shot Putt was sufficient to give Doherty a silver medal in the Shot Putt. Under the guidance of Damien Crawford, Doherty has had his finest season date and will now take a well deserved break before resuming training in September for the Indoor season ahead.
This weekend, Brendan O’Donnell, fresh from his exploits at the European Youth Olympics in Tbilisi will travel to Bedford in England to compete in the Hammer Throw in the English AAA u17 Championships. O’Donnell will hope to conclude what has been his most successful season to date on a high.
