THE 2016 AFL European Championships, which are taking place in London this week, has plenty of Donegal interest with ten players from Donegal included on the Irish Banshees side.
The Irish women get their Championships underway today when they take on the European Crusaders at Motspur Park.
The Donegal women – from Letterkenny Gaels, Kilcar, Gaoth Dobhair, Buncrana and Termon – all play at club level for the Ulster Kookaburras and came through a trials process to be selected for the Banshees.
Leona Russell (Letterkenny Gaels) is joined on the squad by Kilcar pair Amy O’Donnell and Niamh McFadden, with four from Gaoth Dobhair – Aisling Gillespie, Carolann Cassidy, Fiona Roarty and Rachael Nic Aoidh – two from Buncrana in Claire Doherty and Mairead Walsh as well as Termon’s Sonia Connaghan.
AFL Europe’s triennial 18-a-side tournament is a warm up for the AFL International Cup, which takes place in August 2017.

Just five players have survived from 2014 to the side that takes part this week.
