SWILLY ROVERS ADVANCED to the next round of the FAI Youth Cup on Saturday thanks to a win over Sligo outfit Strand Celtic.Â
Swilly Rovers 3 Strand Celtic (Sligo) 0
This match started with the home side losing defender Duncan Patterson to injury after four minutes.
The away side dominated the first quarter without creating any worthwhile chances.
Swilly took the lead against the run of play when great work down the left by Marty Doyle and Shaun Crossan ended the latter crossing for the in-rushing Mark Wilson (pictured below) to side-foot home.
The Sligo based club lost a midfielder to a red card on 22 minutes after a dangerous tackle on Caolin Murray.
A few minutes later, another mazy run by Crossan was met by Stephen Gallagher who volleyed to the back of the net from six yards.
On the stroke of half time, Crossan after two assists got his first and Swilly’s third after a terrific shot from the edge of the area.
The second half was played in Strand’s half but a few near misses and saves from the opposing keeper meant the match ended 3-0
The home side booked a home draw in the second round, which will be against neighbours Letterkenny Rovers on or ‪before 29th November.
Swilly Rovers: Dane Dunworth, Louis Cole, Marty Doyle, Matthew Sweeney, Duncan Patterson, Caolin Murray, Brian Diver, Adam Salhi, Mark Wilson, Stephen Gallagher, Shaun Crossan. Subs: Cameron Gormley, Andres Axfentiou, Ryan Deeney, Kieran Connors.
