SWILLY ROVERS MIDFIELDER Barry Mooney departed for India today as he embarks on a volunteering mission with The Hope Foundation.
The 26-year-old Ramelton man is traveling solo, but will join up with other volunteers upon arrival in Kolkata, in the West Bengal region of India.
“I’m going out to work with the disadvantaged, particularly the street and slum children of Kolkata,” Mooney explained.

“Hope aims to give education, health care, lifeskills and protection to those in need.

Mooney signed up last year when he was attending NUI Galway.
He said: “I didn’t really have a reason as such, but I’ve always wanted to do something like this. I just thought it would be a good experience and gives me a chance to do something worthwhile.
[adrotate group=”85″]“So, I’m volunteering for a while out there and have raised a few quid to help those who have nothing.”
Mooney has raised over €4,000 already.
