BRENDAN O’DONNELL picked the perfect time for a new personal best to reach the hammer throw final at the European Youth Athletics Championships in Tbilisi.
The Lifford Strabane AC man reached out to 70.06 metres to book a spot in tomorrow evening’s hammer final.
O’Donnell, a student at St Eunan’s College, who is coached by his father, John, was the fourth best in Group A, which was won by Mihaita Andrei Micu from Romania at 73.82.
Jake Norris of Great Britain (73.23) and Ragnar Carlsson from Sweden (70.56) were next best with O’Donnell brilliantly smashing his P.B.
That stood at 67.72 from last month at the Mary Peter’s Track in Belfast.
O’Donnell finished seventh last year at the European Youth Olympic Festival, also in Tbilisi, after being inhibited by a bout of food poisoning before competing.
The EYOF winner, Myhaylo Havrylyuk from Ukraine won the Group B semi-final this morning, reaching 76.69.
