Seamus Coleman faces a month of inaction due to a stress fracture in his foot.
The Killybegs man had to sit out the Republic of Ireland’s friendly with Poland in Wroclaw last night due to the injury.
The Irish skipper played in Thursday’s Nations League defeat to Wales in Cardiff and is in a battle to be fit for next month’s games against Denmark and Wales.
“Seamus went for a scan, he has a little stress fracture, which is a concern,” Ireland manager Martin O’Neill told RTÉ Sport.
O’Neill praised Coleman for traveling to Poland for the 1-1 draw in spite of being laid up.
O’Neill said: “He could easily have got a flight home, but he stayed with the team.
“He is a great captain, a really great captain. He is inspirational and obviously we hope he is back in time for the games coming up.”
