St Eunan’s needed two late point and nerves of steel to win the Hurling League Cup in Burt.
St Eunan’s 0-14 Buncrana 2-6
Played in perfect hurling conditions at Hberian Park, Burt fierce hurling rivals St Eunan’s and Buncrana met in the Minor 2019 League final.
With both teams, having defeated each other in the early rounds this was a game that could have gone either way.
St Eunan’s started well with Paul o Donnell and Gavin Forde scoring a series of fine points whilst at the other end Buncrana chalked up a number of wides.
St Eunans quickly raced out to an 8-point lead however, Buncrana responded with a quick goal and a point.
The tempo increased as both teams tackled hard trying to create scoring opportunities. Half-time came with St Eunan’s ahead by five points.
St Eunan’s started the second half with a point but then Buncrana took over with a move, which went the length of the pitch; they hit the back of the Eunan’s net.
With Buncrana’s midfield dominating, they drew level and then took the lead as their shooting accuracy improved.
Paul O’Donnell and Peter Kelly then restored the Eunan’s lead and with minutes to go Buncrana went in search of the necessary goal.
A late Buncrana free, which was dropped short into the St Eunan’s square, was cleared with great difficulty and the final whistle went.
St Eunan’s Captain Kealan Barrett received the Cup from Hurling Chairperson Manus O’Donnell expressing relief at the victory and thanking Buncrans, Burt, Referee Hugo Wallace plus the Eunan’s Management team.
