THE Donegal Town Area final in the Brian McCormick Sports Cup offers St Catherine’s manager Daniel Breslin a chance to win some silverware in just his third game in charge.
The Killybegs outfit (pictured above), under the management of Brian Dorrian won their local area competition last season before going onto win the Brian McCormick Sports Premier Division and then the cup, courtesy of a victory over Castlefin Celtic.
Breslin took over in the summer and has seen his side defeat Eany Celtic 10-0 last weekend having opened with a 3-1 victory against Dunkineely Celtic.
“I wouldn’t read too much into last week’s result,” Breslin said ahead of today’s game against Cappry Rovers. “With St Naul’s playing in the championship it meant that Eany had a very young team.”
Breslin is someone who knows all about double-jobbing. Last Saturday night he was in the red of Killybegs as they lost 1-15 to 2-4 against Kilcar in the RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta SFC.
With Killybegs facing Naomh Muire this afternoon, it means that St Catherine’s will be without Brendan McGuire, Donal McGuire, Christopher Murrin, Evan Broderick, Michael Mullin and Shane Molloy.
David Conwell was sent off in Fintra last week and can line out this afternoon at Emerald Park (kick-off 1:30pm), with Antoine O’Hara, Conor Knox and Paul McFadden boosting the St Catherine’s numbers.
“It’s a competition that we’ve always held in high esteem,” Breslin said of the Brian McCormick Sports Cup. “Ourselves and Cappry Rovers will see plenty of one another as we’re meeting again in the first league match next week.”
Cappry Rovers, who are managed by Seamus Doherty, enter this afternoon’s contest in good form themselves having won 6-0 at Copany Rovers and then 2-0 against Erne Wanderers thus far with Darren O’Leary, in particular, in form.
Last year Cappry were the main challengers with St Catherine’s for long spells of the season and lost 1-0 at Emerald Park on their last appearance there, with Ryan McHugh scoring the winner.
