Six Donegal women have now been confirmed as part of the Irish Banshees Australian Rules team that will take part in the AFL International Cup in Australia in August.
Gweedore trio Aisling Gillespie, Roisin McFadden and Rachel McGee will be on board for the long flight Down Under.
Another Gweedore duo, Carolann Cassidy and Fiona Roarty, along with Letterkenny’s Leona Russell, were previously confirmed as part of the panel.
Now, the total number from Donegal stands at an impressive six.
The Banshees will make the trip to Melbourne for the prestigious tournament in the autumn and will be back-boned by players from Donegal – all of whom play for the Ulster Kookaburras.
The AFL International Cup takes place in Melbourne from August 5-19 next and the three Donegal woman have come through collective and individual training since the AFL European Championships.
At those Championships, the Banshees reached the final where they only lost to the GB Swans 1-2 (8) to 0-2 (2).
Former Letterkenny Institute of Technology student Aine Higgins is also included on the Banshees squad.
The trip will be a costly one, however – and the players are all seeking funding and sponsorship to aid in making the journey.
In return for sponsorship of players, business can receive: Branding on the player biography page on the official website, a listing on the Facebook page, a ticket for each €100 in a sponsors’ draw; and a tax receipt is also available against any sponsorship given to a National Team player.
