SINEAD JENNINGS has fulfilled her Olympic dream.
Thirty-eight-year-old Jennings, who is from Letterkenny, and her partner in the lightweight women’s double sculls, Claire Lambe, finished third in the B final at Aiguebelette in France of the World Rowing Championships this morning.
Jennings and Lambe went out on the offensive and were second at the 500-metre split before going over first in both the 1,000 and 1,500-metre mark. Third place was enough with all but last place progressing.
China won in a time of 6:59.31, ahead of Poland who clocked 7:00.37 with Ireland third in 7:00.67.
Then came Russia on 7:00.79 in fourth with the last spot going to the United States on 7:02.21.
Sweden, who clocked 7:02.45, miss out on Rio.
The Irish duo missed out narrowly on automatic qualification for next year’s Olympics in Rio when they were pipped on Thursday for third place in the semi-final. However, the top five in the B final join the six A finalists at the Olympics.
