RYAN MCHUGH and Patrick McBrearty were central figures yesterday as Martin McHugh’s Ulster University finally put Garda College to bed in the Sigerson Cup.
McHugh scored the first goal in a 2-15 to 0-13 win, though they needed extra time to see off the Garda College.
McHugh and Michael McEvoy netted the goals, while Patrick McBrearty helped himself to seven points in the win,
Eoin McHugh came on as a substitute in the first half as UU ground out a win.
UU are the favourites for the Sigerson Cup this year and they will meet holders UCD in the quarter-final after UCD’s 5-16 to 2-6 win over IT Sligo at Belfield.
Jamie Brennan hit three points for Sligo, while Eoghan Ban Gallagher bagged one of the goals. Cathal McGettigan from Milford scored a free while Andrew McClean (Kilcar) and Eamonn McGrath (Aodh Ruadh) stared with Dungloe’s Darren Curran coming on as a sub.
Naomh Conaill’s Ciaran Thompson helped himself to two points in DIT’s 1-13 to 0-11 win over Athlone IT, with Moville’s Danny Monagle on the AIT side.
St Eunan’s man Caolan Ward scored a point as IT Carlow defeated IT Tralee 1-8 to 0-9.
Kilcar’s Matthew McClean, Aodh Ruadh’s Colm Kelly and Na Rossa’s Christian Bonner all came on as subs for NUI Galway, but they lost out 1-9 to 1-7 against St Mary’s.
Gaoth Dobhair’s Prionnsias Gallagher, Cloughaneely’s John McGarvey and Naomh Columba man Ryan Gillespie all appeared for St Patrick’s, but they went down to a chastening 3-24 to 0-10 loss against UCC.
