As the Donegal County Board begins the process of replacing Rory Gallagher as senior football team manager, a shock contender has emerged in the race.
Some influential figures within the GAA in Donegal are said to be urging the County Board to approach Seamus McEnaney, the former Monaghan and Meath boss who managed Wexford in 2017.
’Banty’ has a number of close allies in Donegal who are believed to be making noises in his favour.
McEnaney had six years as manager of his native Monaghan before a disappointing two years at the helm in Meath in 2011 and 2012. This year, although Wexford won promotion from Division 4, they lost to Carlow in Leinster while Monaghan drew an end to their summer in the qualifiers.
Although the mention of McEnaney would certainly raise eyebrows, the Donegal Under-21 manager Declan Bonner, who had a previous spell as senior manager from 1997 to 2000, remains the front-runner for the position vacated by Gallagher last Monday.
While Pete McGrath indicated last week that he would be receptive of the possibility of becoming the Donegal manager, Donegal officials do not see the ex-Down and Fermanagh manager as a viable candidate for the job.
Others who have been linked include Gary McDaid, Maxi Curran, Richard Thornton, Sean Paul Barrett and Paul McGonigle.
Last night, the Donegal County Board confirmed that they are now seeking applications or nominations for the position.
