Republic of Ireland soccer legend Shay Given has been announced as an ambassador of the Donegal Sports Star Awards.
Given, who is now a goalkeeping coach at Derby County in the Championship, played in the 2002 World Cup and was at Euro 2012 and Euro 2016 with the Irish squad.
“Sorry I can’t be there tonight,” Given said in a video message to the function.
“I want to thank the committee for putting me forward. It is a huge honour. Everyone in the room is a winner.”
Given played in the Premier League with Newcastle, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Stoke City and was capped 134 times by the Republic of Ireland.
He said: “I represented the county and the country and playing in the Premier League was a dream come true.
“You have to dream big. You can follow your dreams.”
