Former Finn Harps and Galway United prospect Declan Sharkey is the latest addition to Letterkenny Rovers’ squad and could feature in Sunday’s FAI Intermediate Cup quarter-final against Home Farm (Leckview Park, 2pm).
Sharkey was included last weekend for the Knockalla Caravans Senior Cup tie at Glenea United and the Isle of Man-born midfielder may well be in the shake-up for Sunday’s big tie.
19-year-old Sharkey, who lined out for Kildrum Tigers at underage level, was on Harps’ books in 2015 and 2016, but didn’t play for the senior team.
Last year, he played with Galway’s U19s and made his senior debut against Mayo League in the EA Sports Cup.
Sharkey – a brother of Sligo Rovers centre-back Seamus – joins Luke Nelis and Christopher Dillon as recent recruits by Eamonn McConigley, the Rovers manager, which compensate somewhat for the departures of Lee Toland and Sean McCarron.
“They are three young players and have all been at League of Ireland level and Christopher was across the water,” McConigley said.
“They have great experience at a young age. We are planning for the future and these players are the future of the club.”
McConigley’s men are well in the hunt in the Four Lanterns Ulster Senior League and will aim to get past Home Farm on Sunday to reach the semi-finals of the Intermediate Cup.
The Rovers manager said: “We know how to handle big games and there’ll be nothing new there when the big games come around. I feel I have the panel of players to cope with that. We have a very good blend of players.”
