REPUBLIC of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman last night made a stunning gesture to support a group helping to feed frontline workers during the coronavirus emergency.
The Killybegs man made a €20,000 donation to ‘Feed The Heroes’, whose fund has swelled to over €300,000 in recent days.
Around 7,500 people have donated and, so far, Coleman’s is the largest donation.
The Everton player has long been a supporter of good causes and the Donegal soccer star is set to appear in social media videos promoting the group this week.
The Feed The Heroes Go Fund Me page was set up only a week ago.
In that time, the group has delivered over 4,000 meals to doctors, nurses, paramedics, fire stations, Gardaí and contact tracing centres. The meals are being delivered nationwide using local providers.
“We’re people with family and friends working 24-hours in the health services fighting COVID19,” the group says.
“We’re observing social distancing but wanted to help. This fund supports money that is paid to delivery restaurants and kitchens to deliver food to our hardworking frontline staff.
“We can get through #COVID-19 together but while we are social distancing, our healthcare workers are flat out.
“We are organising with local operators to deliver regular lunch and dinner drops nationwide.”
Food operators are also being encouraged to sign up to the group, who said: “We have been utterly blown away by the response of the public, and the trust and responsiblity they are giving us to support the family, friends and loved ones they have on the front line.
“We have ramped up an operation and now have networks across the country.
“Our partners are dropping planned meals in coordination with frontline staff where it’s needed. This has been greeted with an incredibly powerful sense of solidarity. You have had an impact.”
