DAVEY HONE takes his Scoil Mhuire first years to Gortakeegan in Monaghan tomorrow afternoon to face Ursuline College from Sligo in the Bank of Ireland FAI Schools First Year Girls National Cup Final (kick-off 1pm).
Grace McColgan snatched the match winner five minutes from time to sink reigning Champions Athlone Community College and advance to the season’s finale.
Last month, the Buncrana students defeated Moville Community College in the Ulster final at Aileach FC when a brace from Spanish exchange student Begona Pinero and another by Mariah McColgan sealed that title.
Now, they’re on the cusp of the ultimate honour – an All-Ireland title.The Buncrana ladies have won a National title in most divisions, the last one was in 2008 in the First Year Cup.
Scoil Mhuire, managed by Hone and assisted by Andrea Kelly, are making a welcome return to the top flight after an eight year absence at this age group.
Can they etch another title win on the Cup come Wednesday evening?
Previously Scoil Mhuire have won three other National titles with FAI Schools. Back in 2004 they captured the Senior Cup, 2001 saw them lift the Minor title and 16 years ago, the school were crowned Junior Champions in 2000.
In December, Scoil Mhuire defeated Ursuline on their way to winning the All-Ireland First Year Girls Futsal Finals in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.
They beat Ursuline College Sligo, Malahide CS Dublin and Colaiste Sun Iascaigh Tipperary.
Ursuline College were in phenomenal form in their semi-final outing with St. Caimin’s CS of Shannon.
The talented Helen Monaghan hit a hat-trick in Athlone Town FC that afternoon while Laura Oates bagged a brace and Cathy Harrison finished off a splendid performance for the Sligo crew.
