THE ORGANISERS of the 2020 Virtual RunDonegal Women’s 5K Run/Walk are hopeful that they will reach the magical figure of 1,000 entries.
“We are currently sitting on 930 entries for Sunday. We are confident that with one final push over the coming days, we can actually secure 1,000 entries which would be quite something,” commented event organiser, Grace Boyle.
The event was initially planned for Sunday, April 5th, but was rescheduled for Sunday, August 23rd due to the Covid-19 restrictions.
“We took a decision back in May that one way or another, we would have some sort of an event to promote and take part in on Sunday, August 23rd. Due to the current restrictions around the number allowed at outdoor gatherings, the race will now be held virtually.
“So we are appealing to those who walk or run who haven’t signed up yet to do so. It’s somewhat ironic that we will have our biggest ever entry in a year when there won’t be an actual race. Getting 1,000 entries was something we have always aspired to in previous years, so with a bit of luck we will get there by the end of the week,” she added.
“This Sunday we are hoping that as many women will get out on their own, in pairs or in small groups and cover the 5K distance by walking, running or jogging. The proceeds are going to a great cause and every cent raised will go to the Brid Carr Ovarian Cancer Research Fund which, once again, has been selected as the main beneficiary.”
Brid Carr, who was a native of Glencolmcille, died from ovarian cancer in 2014 aged 54. Last year €7,500 was raised through the annual event which attracted an entry of 600.
“So, many have played a part in pulling things together. While it has been a longer run-in than usual, the upside is that that we have attracted a record entry. Our thanks go the Kelly Group London, Peter McGinley, Euro Diamond Drilling, London, Tony and Bernadette McGovern, Leitrim and London, MCM, Ocean Knowledge and Donegal Sports Partnership. Their support has been vital and on behalf of the organisers I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable 5K on Sunday,” Grace added.
