RONAN CURTIS was Derry City’s match winner last night as the Candystripes scored their first win of Kenny Shiels’s era.
Curtis netted in the 59th minute as Derry defeated Cork City at Brandywell Stadium.
After linking up with Barry McNamee on the edge of the box, Curtis surged clear and slotted past Mark McNulty, the Cork goalkeeper.
“He’s a good boy. He’s a very good prospect,” Shiels said of 19-year-old St Johnston man Curtis.
“He knows that there is a lot of work in front of him if he wants to become an established League of Ireland player.”
Curts signed a two-year deal at Derry back in November and had scored his first Derry goal in the final game of last season, a 4-1 defeat at Longford Town.
Cork, who had Ballybofey’s Johnny Dunleavy in their starting line-up, had Greg Bolger sent off late on for a foul on Curtis.
It was an emotional night at Brandywell. The Derry City number 18 shirt was retired before the game in memory of the late Mark Farren, the Greencastle native who passed away recently following a battle with a brain tumor.
Farren, who scored 113 goals for Derry, is the club’s record goalscorer.
The 2,500 in attendance rose in the 18th minute for a minute’s applause in honour of Farren.
