It’s must-win for Roma McLaughlin and the Republic of Ireland Under-19s tomorrow evening when they take on Ukraine.
The game at Markets Field is the Girls in Green’s second in the Elite round of qualifiers and comes after a 2-1 loss to Scotland last night – when a 95th minute penalty sealed a dramatic win for the Scots.
Greencastle woman McLaughlin is again likely to be in the engine room and manager Dave Connell says there is plenty of improvement to come from his team.
“I thought we were pretty poor in the first half – not up to our usual standards,” Connell said.
“We were a bit better in the second half, but overall, I thought we were second best. I’d have been happy with a point but unfortunately it’s a bitter pill to take in the end. We can play a lot better than that.
“All we have to do is try and win the two games. We’ll pick the heads up and try get back into the reckoning as quickly as we can.”
Ireland will take on Finland on Sunday evening in their final Elite qualifier.
