Rhys Irwin from Kilmacrennan heads to race at Moto GP in Silverstone this weekend to continue his racing dream sharing a paddock with his Moto GP heros Marc Marques and Valentino Rossi.
As the only Irish rider selected to be part of the British Isles talent Cup road to Moto GP programme 2018 the BTC organisers have given him a helmet displaying his own National flag.
The last rider from the Irish republic to race at Moto GP level was the famous Eddie Laycock in the ’90’s.
When asked a very excited Rhys commented: “This is my dream to race at this level and in my first year racing a Moto 3 which is very different from anything I have ever raced before.
“I’ve never raced in Silverstone which leaves me a little disadvantaged against the other racers who have raced there with the BSB but I am going to just go for it over the two races.
“I am really looking forward to racing alongside the best of the best.”
Rhys went on to acknowledge that his racing would not be possible without the encouragement and support of his sponsors, especially James Gallagher of Oasis Bar Letterkenny and Wesley Regan of Clean Rubber Donegal/Sligo.
