Results: 1,300 children from 87 schools were at the Donegal primary school athletics today

THE 46th STAGING of the Donegal annual primary school athletics took place at Finn Valley Athletic Club today.

A huge turnout of over 1,300 schoolchildren from 87 schools dotted around the county took part in the event in Stranorlar.

There literally was blood, sweat and tears but plenty of smiles of celebration and camaraderie on display at the excellently-run event.

The list of winners indicates medals and certificates on their way to Carndonagh in the north and to Ballyshannon and Killybegs in the south and all points in-between.

Event Director Patsy Mc Gonagle was fullsome in his praise for his volunteers,which included students from Finn Valley College and of course the teachers in the various schools.

“The annual primary school athletics at Finn Valley is a learning and educational experience for thousands since its inception 46 years ago at Mac Cumhaill Park in Ballybofey now located here on the Berlin Blue track at Finn Valley across the river,” McGonagle told Donegal Sport Hub.

“It’s an event that we’ve run now for some time but that doesn’t take away from the Trojan work of the many volunteers, who helped the day run smoothly. I look forward to the day that all schools would engage and qualify per regional qualifiers.”

Stand out performances came from the likes of Joseph Gillespie, Sessiaghoneill; Lucy McGlynn, Holy Family Ballyshannon; Conor Neely, Creeslough; Liam Carlin, Lifford; Riona Doherty, St Mary’s Stranorlar; Aisling McArdle, St Catherine’s; Keeva Thompson, Dooish ; Aoife Giles, Cranford; Hannah Murray, St Mary’s Castlefinn; Brendan Mbura, Scoil Colmcille Letterkenny; Kate Louise McMonagle, Taobhaoige Cloghan; Rhianna McColgan, Muff and Favour Okoriji, Illistrin – underlining that it’s not about that the key being participation and children being given the opportunity.
