Dick Duffy Memorial Youth League
Gweedore United 2-0 Gweedore Celtic
This local derby played in windy conditions at Carrickboyle saw the home side collect all three points following a strong second half performance in front of a large turnout.
The game started with both sides evenly matched and the conditions restricting both teams from getting into any free flowing football. Chances were few and far between in the opening half, however the visitors hit the post in the 26th minute when Michael Roarty headed a Conor Boyle cross onto the post.
In the second half United upped the tempo and played good football putting the Celtic defence under pressure throughout. The home side got their deserved lead in the 58th minute when Ciaran McFadden finished well from close range following a good move and an excellent cross from Ultan Boyle.
The home side continued to play well in search of the second goal. It was Celtic who should have scored an equaliser against the run of play in the 67th minute when Liam Wiggins found himself one on one with Jamie Hunter, however he put the ball just wide of the post. United seen decent chances through Noel Sweeney, Odhran McFadden and Dennis Coll, however Sweeney in the visitors nets did well on each occasion.
The home side got their second goal in the 72nd minute when excellent work from Mark McFadden was again finished from close range by Ciaran McFadden. Shaun McFadden should have made it 3-0 in the 84th minute, however Sweeney saved well.
Kyron Glennon had a chance to get a consolidation for the visitors in the in the 89th minute, however Conor McFadden made a excellent tackle to prevent a shot by Glennon. Daniel McLaughlin played well at the back for Celtic and it was an excellent team performance from United in this encounter.
Drumkeen United 2-0 Fanad United
In a game not for the football purists, it was Drumkeen who came out on top of this battle at St Patricks Park and strengthen their grip on the league trophy after a 2-0 victory against Fanad United.
In what was a much changed Drumkeen side from previous weeks, in came Sean Peoples, Micheal Guthrie, Fergal O Callaghan and Conor Patton to get the chance to impress the manager, and their managers faith was repaid by solid performances from all four players.
It was Drumkeen who created the first chance of the game and a Kevin Bonner rasper from 25 yards aided by the breeze crashed off the crossbar. Either side of a chance from Fanad, Anthony Bogle had twice the chance to give Drumkeen the lead, however twice he was denied by the Fanad goalkeeper who saved both efforts with his body.
Drumkeen were not going to allow their visitors the chance to go in at half time with the sides level and on 43 minutes Darren Bonner dealt Fanad a cruel blow, and with one swing of his sweet left foot put the ball beyond the keeper from all of 25 yards.
In what turned out to be a drab second half where Drumkeen were quite content to allow their visitors the majority of possession and it was from one of these counter attacks that Drumkeen extended their lead and on the 77th minute it was the mercurial Kevin Bonner who broke at speed towards the heart of the Fanad defence and from a acute angle applied the finish that his performance deserved.
Fanad had a few chances towards the end to give Drumkeen a nervy finish however it was the hosts marshalled by the steady Carl Dunnion in goals to see out the game with a two goal advantage.
