GAA OFFICIALS anticipate that the 2020 fixtures calendar will have to be redrawn as the first Championships game of 2020 became the latest victim of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The first scheduled Senior Football Championship game of the year – the Connacht clash of New York and Galway, which had been pencilled in for Sunday, May 3 – has been postponed.
The decision was taken due to the current uncertainty created by the Covid 19 pandemic.
In a statement, the GAA said that ‘the future of this fixture will be considered at a later date’.
At the moment, all GAA activity – including the concluding rounds of the Allianz League – is suspended until at least March 29.
However, it is expected that the period of inaction will now go on beyond that date.
Donegal are pencilled in to open the defence of their Ulster SFC title against Tyrone on May 17 at Sean MacCumhaill Park, but the future is clouded now in uncertainty for that and other games. No decision has been made on any fixture other than the New York-Galway fixture.
The GAA said that their consideration of the New York-Galway game would be made ‘in the context of the anticipated overall re-drawing of the national fixtures calendar for 2020 as necessitated by the ongoing disruption to the GAA games programme.’
The club calendar would also have to be radically altered should the suspension continue much beyond March 29.
