JASON QUIGLEY tipped the scales at 159.6lbs ahead of his meeting with Jorgé Melendez tomorrow night at The Forum in Inglewood, Los Angeles.
The Ballybofey man was looking in top shape as he stood on the scales in front of the large media attendance.
The ten-round middleweight bout will see Quigley (11-0) aim to extend his unbeaten professional record.
“This is another hurdle on my journey and it’s time for me to take him out of there,” Quigley said.
“He brings a good knockout percentage and a lot of experience. I don’t worry about anyone I get in with. I’ve trained 110 per cent and have prepared myself better than anyone.”
Quigley breezed through 2015 with six wins after a three-fight debut year and this is his first contest since a uanimous decision win against the experienced James De La Rosa in May.
It was Quigley’s first time to go ten rounds and the Ballybofey man was the comfortable winner at the close of the tenth stanza on a night that represented a big step in his career.
Now, he goes again with Melendez the man in the blue corner tomorrow night.
Melendez – trained by the renowned Mexican coach Robert Garcia – has a decent overall record with 30 wins from his 38 fights and 28 of those registered inside the scheduled distance.
The 27-year-old Puerto Rican has lost four of his last six bouts, however, including an eighth-round stoppage against Ievgen Khytrov, an old rival of Quigley’s.
In 2013, while Khytrov was the defending World champion, Quigley defeated by the Ukranian in the European Senior semi-final.
Bernard Hopkins returns to the canvas for ‘The Final 1’ as the legendary 51-year-old, a two-division former world champion and future Hall of Famer, squares up to the hard-hitting light heavyweight contender Joe Smith Jr in the headline act tomorrow night.
Hopkins has a 55-7-2 (32KOs) card with 27-year-old Smith Jr standing at 22-1 with 18 KOs.
Undefeated featherweight superstar and Olympian Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz Jr will take on Horacio Garcia in the co-main event with a full slate of undefeated Golden Boy Promotions prospects, including Quigley.
Oleksandr Usyk (10-0, 9Kos) faces Thaniso Mchunu for a WBO cruiserweight belt with 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Yamaguchi Falcao taking on German Perez for the WBC latino middleweight title.
The card, including the Quigley-Melendez bout, will be screen live on HBO World Championship Boxing and will be streamed live by RingTV.com
