It’s that time of the week again – we have EIGHT nominees in our latest Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub Sports Person of the Week poll, in association with O’Reilly’s Sportswear.
Each weekly award winner will receive a kitbag, a jersey and a half-zip, supplied by O’Reilly’s.
The award winner will be chosen via a public vote from a shortlist selected by our panel.
O’Reilly’s Sportswear was founded in 2017 by well-known Twin Towns sporting brothers Steven and Martin O’Reilly.
Our poll closes at noon on Thursday.
Joe Barr (Team Joe Barr)
Joe Bar returned to win the Race Around Ireland and break his own record, set in the first edition of the race in 2009, in the process.
The 59-year-old completed 1,340 miles of non-stop cycling in 104 hours and three minutes – breaking the record he set in as the inaugural winner of the race in 2009.
Joe – who had only three-and-a-half hours of sleep during the race – was awarded the Joe Roche award and the the Ciarán Smith award for the fastest times through special sections of the race.
Niall Campbell (Burt)
Burt overcame 13-man Setanta to win their 39th Donegal Senior Hurling Championship crown on Saturday at O’Donnell Park.
The Hibernian men won 3-14 to 1-14 and Campbell was central to their cause. Campbell’s seven points helped keep the scoreboard ticking for Burt during the periods when Setanta – spurred by the sublime Declan Coulter – were coming on strong.
Campbell’s scored were key in keeping Burt in command.
Ronan Curtis (Portsmouth)
What a start Ronan Curtis has had to his Portsmouth career.
The St Johnston man has already hit five goals for Pompey. And he netted twice on Saturday – and created the other – as Portsmouth overcame Plymouth 3-0.
Curtis was named on the Republic of Ireland U21 squad this week by Noel King and he goes from strength to strength.
Mark Hunter (Bonagee United)
Bonagee United advances to the Letterkenny Area final of the Brian McCormick Cup thanks to a 3-2 win over Whitestrand United on Sunday.
Bonagee were indebted to Mark Hunter, who netted a hat-trick in the win.
After just four minutes, Hunter had Bonagee in front. And despite Whitestrand coming back into the game, Hunter’s treble proved key for the Dry Arch men.
Sinead McBride (Illistrin)
Illistrin had to come from behind to defeat Mulroy Academy in Sunday evening’s Dessie Kelly Cup final at Leckview Park.
They were guided to glory by Sinead McBride, who scored a hat-trick in the 5-1 win.
It was a night to remember for McBride, who played the starring role as Illistrin claimed a memorable Cup win.
Ann Marie McGlynn (LAC)
Letterkenny AC’s Ann Marie McGlynn won the women’s race at the Waterside Half Marathon in Derry on Sunday.
The women’s Ulster title went to McGlynn – who also claimed the course record in an outstanding time of 1.17.01. It was McGlynn’s third year in a row to win the title.
Tara O’Connor (Carndonagh Ladies)
Carndonagh FC’s ladies won the second section of the North West Women’s Super League on Thursday night thanks to a 6-1 win over Moville.
Stat of the show was undoubtedly Tara O’Connor, who scored five of the Carndonagh goals. It has been an excellent second half of the season for Carn and O’Connor’s handful saw them bask in the silverware.
Mark Timlin (Finn Harps)
As Finn Harps extended their unbeaten run to eight games on Friday night, Mark Timlin was in excellent form.
Timlin was Man of the Match as Harps overcame Galway United 2-0 at Finn Park. It was one of the Buncrana man’s best displays in a Harps shirt.
Timlin helped to create the first goal for Mikey Place and scored an excellent second goal.
