THERE were some star performers around Donegal this week – and it’s time for you to cast you vote in this week’s Anthony Conaghan Cars Player of the Week poll.
We have teamed up with Murphy’s Gloves to offer a pair of gloves for our weekly winner.
[adrotate group=”52″]Shane Graham (Letterkenny Gaels)
The Letterkenny Gaels goalkeeper helped his side to a place in the last eight of the Michael Murphy Sports and Leisure Intermediate Football Championship, following their narrow 0-12 to 1-8 win over Urris at Pairc na nGael on Saturday evening. Graham’s kick-outs were good throughout; he made a vital first half save to deny the visitors’ danger man Kevin McLaughlin and then, with two minutes left and the match level, kicked the winning 45.
Jamie Grant (Termon)
Termon have an exciting batch in their Under-14 ranks and on Monday the side from the Burn Road added the Northern Regional Board title to the league crown. They didn’t have it all their own way against St Eunan’s at Moyle View as the Letterkenny side ran into a four-point first half lead. Grant, playing midfield, was the driving force in the 1-16 to 3-5 win, as well as contributing five points – four of which came from play – as Termon look forward to a clash with Aodh Ruadh in the All-County semi-final.
Johnny McGroddy (Downings)
Downings and Milford played out an exciting Northern Regional Board Under-14B final in Milford on Monday evening, with a number of stand-out performers. The brightest light, though, was Downings’ centre-forward Johnny McGroddy, who scored 3-5 in the 5-12 to 3-10 victory. All of his goals came in the second half. McGroddy shot over Milford goalkeeper John Matthews for his first goal, rounded him for the second before a cheeky dink sealed the hat-trick late on.
Christy Hegarty (Moville)
Moville scored a big 1-12 to 0-6 win over Robert Emmets on Saturday evening in Castlefin. Christy Hegarty was to the fore for the Inishowen men, scoring 1-4, including an early goal when the big man forced home. Hegarty was the scorer in chief for a Moville side that was lining out without Malachy McDermott.
Gary Merritt (Milford)
Milford are riding high at the top of the AllSportStore.com All-County Football League Division 2 and are well on course for a first ever promotion to Division 1. On Sunday, they ground out a narrow win over Sean MacCumhaills, thanks to an early Kyle Black goal and a late Jonny Logue goal. Gary Merritt’s class told in spells for Milford. Not least was there a beauty of a point from long-range, but Merritt is one of those who might be yearning for a bigger stage – and with good reason.
Michael Langan (St Michael’s)
Kilcar hadn’t lost in Towney all year until Sunday in the AllSportStore.com All-County Football League Division 1. Then, St Michael’s broke that run with a splendid second half performance sealing a 1-16 to 1-13 victory. Central to that success was Michael Langan, who lined up at midfield and gave an exhibition of point-scoring. Last year’s county minor finished the day with a decent personal total of seven points – three from play.
Sam Doherty (Buncrana and Donegal Under-21 hulers)
Donegal won the All-Ireland Under-21C hurling championship for the second year in succession on Saturday. Fermanagh were the beaten finalists in what turned into a reasonably routine 3-7 to 1-2 victory at Healy Park for the team managed by Tom Hennessey. Wing-back Sam Doherty from Buncrana scored a 35th minute goal to break Fermanagh’s resistence and then added a second from a penalty that he’d won himself 10 minutes later.
Orla Corry (Termon)
On Friday night at St Mary’s Park in Convoy, Termon’s ladies came out on top in a titanic Under-14A Championship final against St Eunan’s. In the end, the Burn Road team won out 6-19 to 7-6, having been five points down halfway through the second half. As the scoreline suggests, it was an exciting, offensive game but when her side needed her most Termon goalkeeper Orla Corry made three fantastic saves in one-on-one situations to deny Shannon Cunningham, who was St Eunan’s most dangerous forward.
Gareth Concarr (Ardara)
Ardara have been struggling this season in the AllSportStore.com All-County Football League Division 1 and needed a bit of magic to get past Bundoran on Sunday. Gareth Concarr was proving to be a useful outlet having scored 1-5 for the team from Pearse Park. In the third minute of injury time and with his team two points down, Concarr managed to goal from a 45-metre free to give his team a dramatic 4-8 to 2-13 victory at Gaelic Park.
