THE ALLSPORTSTORE.COM ALL-COUNTY FOOTBALL LEAGUE provided the bulk of the weekend but the county minors were also in Ulster championship action and there was an U-14 League final.
Well done to Stephen Griffin from St Naul’s, who was named as the Anthony Conaghan Sports Player of the Week having scored 1-8 in Division 2 against Four Masters the weekend before last.
Have a look at the options below and have a vote. We’ll announce the winner on Friday evening.
Niall O’Donnell (Donegal minors)
‘A FABULOUS TALENT’ was how Shaun Paul Barrett, the Donegal minor manager, described Niall O’Donnell after the St Eunan’s man’s match-winning heroics in Belfast.
On Sunday night, Antrim looked to have Donegal beaten when Eamon Fyffe scored 2-3 after coming off the bench. Donegal were five points in arrears and the cord was unravelling rapidly.
Enter O’Donnell. He’d scored a point just 17 seconds in when he might well have gone for a goal, but twice inside 60 seconds in the 50th minute, O’Donnell buried goals. He scored 2-5, including some wonder points, to fire Donegal to a 2-11 to 2-7 win.
Colm McFadden (St Michael’s)
WITH THE Ulster SFC now just around the corner for Donegal, the performance of Colm McFadden at The Bridge on Saturday night was timely.
St Michael’s inflicted a first League defeat of 2016 on Gaoth Dobhair with a 3-8 to 0-11 win.
McFadden was at the heartbeat, scoring 2-3. McFadden hit two second-half goals, including a late penalty, to inspire his men to a win.
Tommy Hourihane (Bundoran)
IN A relegation four-pointer at Gaelic Park, there was little between Bundoran and Glenswilly. But Tommy Hourihane proved to be the match-winner for Bundoran.
It was a moment of quality that won the day for Bundoran and it was provided by Hourihane, who delicately lobbed over Glenswilly goalkeeper, Philip O’Donnell, in added time.
Stephen McBrearty (Kilcar)
KILCAR were again missing their marquee contingent with Ryan McHugh, Mark McHugh, Eoin McHugh and Patrick McBrearty all pacing the sideline at The Burn Road.
Kilcar managed to defeat Termon, but not before a fright in the second half.
Stephen McBrearty was an old head on young shoulders in the key moments in Termon. Scored seven points and was the man who made Kilcar tick, steering them over the line.
Conor McCahill (Na Rossa)
AT DOOEY on Friday night, Na Rossa shocked Red Hughs, the leaders in Division 4, with a 5-13 to 0-8 win.
Conor McCahill was at the nervecentre for Na Rossa and scored a fine 3-2. McCahill bagged two goals late in the first half and completed his hat-trick in the second half as Barry Doherty’s team scored a fine win.
Jamie Grant (Termon Under-14’s)
TERMON have an excellent Under-14 side and on Friday night at Dunfanaghy they were minus a couple of players but still won the All-County Division 2 League final against Gaoth Dobhair in a very exciting contest that finished 2-13 to 5-2 for the Burn Road side.
In the middle of the field, Termon were dominant for large spells, and alongside Aaron Gallagher, Jamie Grant stood out more than most. He managed to pop over a goal and six points to bring the cup back to Termon.
Lee McMonagle (St Eunan’s)
ST EUNAN’S had been involved in fireworks a week beforehand when they narrowly overcame Bundoran in a crazy fixture at Gaelic Park, 4-15 to 6-7.
Lee Monagle’s 3-3 on his return from injury was somewhat buried in that scoreline but the corner-forward continued his good form on Saturday.
On Saturday when Dungloe came to O’Donnell Park, McMonagle, in particular, had a fruitful game scoring six times – four of those efforts in the 1-17 to 0-10 win came from play with a fine 45 and crisp free-kick also part of his portfolio.
