FORMER DONEGAL CAPTAIN Anthony Molloy dedicated his Freedom of Donegal award to ‘the men of ‘92’ this evening in Lifford.
Throngs of family, friends, former team-mates and well-wishers turned up at the County House in Lifford for the ceremony.
“I’m totally honoured, humbled and proud to be the recipient of this great award,” Molloy told Donegal Sport Hub.
“I’d have to accept it on behalf of the men of ’92. They were a very special bunch of lads and a very talented bunch of players.
[adrotate group=”43″]“They had a lot of character that ran through the team. We had great times from the playing fields to the back of the bus.
“I will never do anything better in my life as accept the Sam Maguire. I will carry that to the grave with me.”
Brian McEniff managed Donegal in ’92 and Molloy was his on-field lieutenant.
[adrotate group=”74″]McEniff said: “Anthony never got the accolades he deserved. He was a super captain, a good guy and a great player. When we were in trouble, Molloy was the man who could pull us out.”
Martin McHugh was a part of the Donegal Under-21 team with Molloy in 1982 and won the All-Ireland. McHugh and Molloy won Ulster senior titles in 1983, 1990 and 1992 as well as the crowning glory when they captured Sam Maguire in ’92.
McHugh said: “I soldiered with him all the time. He was a real passionate individual and it’s great to see him honoured.”
[adrotate group=”73″]At this evening’s ceremony, Charlie Collins also spoke with County Council Chairman, Ciaran Brogan, Donegal County Board Chairman Sean Dunnion, Councillor Tom Connaghan who managed that Under-21 team in 1982, John McConnell from the Ardara GAA club and Michael Lafferty, a former team-mate of Molloy’s, who was on McEniff’s backroom team in ’92.
