LETTERKENNY ROVERS are on their way to the Aviva Stadium after booking their place in the FAI Intermediate Cup final yesterday.
The final whistle was greeted with scenes of unbridled joy as Rovers toasted a historic win.
“I am so over the moon for the boys,” beamed their manager, Eamon McConigley.
“They have worked so hard. The effort they have put in…the big thing is that it’s coming from them, not from me. With my experience I can guide them. We want to win this competition and we’re well on our way.
“We have kept going to the end in every game we’ve played. Everyone has put in a fantastic shift.”
Twenty years ago, McConigley was player-manager of a Fanad United side that lost 1-0 to Wayside Celtic in the final. Since then, no Donegal team has reached the final – until now.
McConigley won the Intermediate Cup with Fanad in 1989 and 1995 – and will now aim to work his magic again.
After yesterday’s win, Charlie Collins spoke with manager McConogley, goalscorers McVeigh and Shovlin, veteran defender Shane Bradley, who has been coaxed out of retirement recently, and Terence Shiels, who made his Rovers debut under Stanley White 20 years ago.
One might say, it’s Roy of the Rovers stuff.
And they’re not done yet. They meet Crumlin United in the final at Aviva Stadium on Saturday, May 14.
