ON A week when Mark English’s place at the Olympic Games was confirmed, a new group of budding athletes took the latest steps on their own journeys.
The Donegal Under-11 Children’s Games took place on Wednesday evening at Finn Valley AC.
Rosses AC’s Aileen Logue went back out west with three gold medals after a successful night by the Finn.
Logue won the girls long jump (3.48m) and an excellent 13.56m throw also captured gold in the turbo javelin.
Logue he played a big role in sealing gold in the girls 4x100m for Rosses AC and she was also fourth in the girls 600m.
A blistering first leg by Harry McGlinchey and a determined never-say-die finale by Lee McGranaghan – backed up by solid middle legs from Nathan Kearns and Eanna Byrne – saw Finn Valley pip Letterkenny in the boys 4x100m relay.
Kearns’ 17.13 for turbo javelin gold was a new personal best, while McGlinchey took silver in the long jump and McGranaghan was the long jump bronze medalist.
Letterkenny AC’s Zion Akpo was an impressive winner of the boys 60m and his club-mate Oisin Cuskelly AC won the boys long jump (3.65m),
It was a long way from Clare to here for Dylan Curley, but the Olympian Youth and Athleic Club ace surged away to win the boys 500m, clocking 1:55.0 in the process.
Curley was on a family trip to Clare, but showed no fatigue in a fine winning win around the Patsy McGonagle Track, while Olympian’s Lucy Campbell took both the girls 60m and 600m titles.
