Letterkenny cyclist Philip Deignan showed his value to Team Sky yesterday as he helped team-mate Wout Poels to a victory on stage two of the Ruta del Sol.
Deignan, who is now 34, continues to hold a valued place in Team Sky and his worth as one of the leading climbing domestiques was on view yesterday on the ascent up Alto de Allanadas, the finale of the stage.
Deignan’s graft enabled Poels to take the stage win and also take hold of the leader’s jersey.
Deignan did a serious bit of pulling until the attacking started and had the lion’s share of the work at the head of the peloton.
Deignan managed to take 20th overall on the stage.
